Yes, it is that night where we dress our children up and goulish costumes and send them out to beg for candy from the neighbors. Have I mentioned I am not very fond of Halloween? I don't know why, really. I liked Halloween as a kid. Picking out my costume, trolling for candy until I couldn't carry the bag anymore, running around the neighborhood in the dark. What's not to love?!
I suppose I started to get a little jaded about this holiday as I entered adulthood and specifically motherhood. When my oldest was almost 2 years old I was all ready to give her the best 1st try at trick or treating a kid could have. I spent weeks making her a fleece kitten costume so she wouldn't be cold in the frozen northland. I measured and cut and sewed it up. Yeah, that's right, I sew!
So, we are all ready for the big night and what happens? That's right, the Halloween Blizzard. Maybe you heard about it, 28 inches of snow, on Halloween. Oh well, we can dress her up and just go to the neighbors close by. She can still have her Halloween. I get her all dressed up, painted her nose pink and painted on whiskers equiped her with a pumpkin bucket and...she threw-up! That's right, she blew chunks all over the living room floor. She ended up with a fever of 102 degrees Farenheit, threw-up all night, and was down for the count for 3 days.
I was devestated! All that work! All that planning! The child probably didn't even realize what was going on. But, what can you do, nothing!
Well, the hubby (he really is something special) mentioned to his folks about the botched Halloween. They said, "well, dress her up again and bring her over here." So we did. They thought she was just darling, of course. They said we should take her to some of their neighbors (all the same houses where my hubby trick or treated as a child) and we did. They all thought she was darling too and since they all had leftover candy they were happy to endulge her in a little post-Halloween trick or treating.

A Day Off
Why is it that days off of work always end up busier than if I were at work? Today I was supposed to go to the teachers' convention in town but I thought I would be better off not dealing with traffic and such and stayed home so get some things done. I started by eating a little breakfast and drinking my coffee...gotta get the blood moving, ya know. Next I started the laundry. Then I cleaned out the front closet. The children had three years worth of winter and spring coats in there and an avalanche of hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens. I got rid of a bunch of coats. I threw out all the mateless gloves and mittens. I put the rest of the gloves and mittens in pairs in an organizer box. I folded all the scarves and stacked up all the hats. I rehung all the rest of the coats and grouped them by owner. I know this will not last long but if you came over right now my front closet would look great and there would even be a hanger for your jacket.
Once I finished with the closet, I made the kids a pizza for lunch. We all went outside then to clean up the yard. The youngest started raking the front yard while the son started up the mower and began mulching the leaves in the backyard. I emptied all my flower pots. Then I helped the youngest bag up her piles of leaves. I used the leaf blower to blow leaves out of the landscaping and clean off the sidewalks. The son continued to mow, now not mulching but picking up the rest of the leaves with the bagger. I did some final sweeping when the son was done. Finally, I washed out my pots.
Now it is time to shower the crud off and make supper. I am thinking beef pot pie.
Tomorrow I will clean the house, wash the towels and sheets, put away all the summer clothes, and shop.
Saturday we are going for a drive up north.
Maybe I can relax on Sunday.

Family Obligations
I know, I am posting 2 days in a row. Can you stand it?!
Okay, so you know I over think things, right? Make way too much of every little decision. So here's my issue today. We got invited to a wedding, the whole crew.
Now let me try to explain. The bride is my SIL's step-daughter. My SIL's has been married to the 2nd husband (super creepy guy but I won't go into that now) for about 8 years. In that time we have met/seen said bride-to-be maybe 3 times. I personally have spoken all of 20 words to the girl. When we got the invitation the youngest asked, "who's that?" When us girls went to the shower (yes, we got invited to that too and we went) the youngest asked, "which one is getting married?" She then proceeded to tell everyone at the shower, "I don't even know the bride."
Now I know some blended families blend together really well and I think that is great but that is not the case here. I am really not sure why we got invited. I would not have been offended in the least. I would completely understand. If she felt the need to invite the us, I certainly wouldn't expect her to invite the children too. The kicker is the kids have a big shindig that same night. Now a family wedding is certainly a good enough excuse for missing the shindig but can we use the shindig as an excuse for missing the wedding? I keep thinking we could just go to the wedding and skip the reception...IDK...that doesn't feel right either. You would think a nice dinner and party would be enough of an attraction for me but, frankly, it's not.
I know if we go (and we probably will) we will have a fine time. Our children will be on their best behavior and look completely adorable. I will look smokin' hot in the new dress I will have to buy. The hubby will look dashing in his coat and tie. We will get to spend time with the other family members that are wondering the same thing I am (Why did we get invited?). We will get home late and have an excuse for skipping church on Sunday.
But there is another thing way in the back of my mind. If we go, do we in turn have to invite them when our children get married? I know, that's a pretty bad thing to think, isn't it? But really, she is the oldest of 3 girls so it is setting a precedent for future obligations. Or maybe it is not about obligation at all and we should just do what we want.

My Favorite Season

Fall is by far my favorite season. I love the cool, crisp air. I love the final burst of color from the mums and seedums in my garden. I love seeing the changing leaves: gold, crimson, yellow, orange, and finally brown. The crunch under my feet brings me back to simpler times. I will go out of my way to stomp some leaves and kick them around. I like the newness of spring but my hayfever makes that time of year no fun for me. In the fall I can enjoy the outdoors without the runny nose and itchy eyes. I love layering on sweatshirts to go for walks. I really like it when the hubby and I can get away to the North Country and sit in front of the fireplace. Fall also puts me in the mood for cooking and baking. Chicken Wild Rice Soup, Apple Crisp, Banana Bread, Chili, Rhubarb Cake, Beef Stew, Pumpkin Bars...I like cooking all the time but something about fall inspires me even more. I know this will lead to the cold of winter but I will relish the last bits of life before the snow flies.
